i had a dream...or a nightmare, more like!!

i am about to sit for my interview for the technology exam...the professor looks at the drawings (btw, A0 size sheets...12 of them!!! aaaaaaaaaaaargh!) and asks me: so why the symmetry line isn't rotated by 45 degrees?

i think, '45 degrees?? why the heck should be rotated like that???'...and i say, 'er...cos the plan is an equilateral triangle...so it actually has three symmetry lines...but none of them is rotated by 45 degrees...er...'...

*but* professor isn't convinced, and goes on, 'no! the symmetry line has ALWAYS to be rotated by 45 degrees!!!!!'.......

here steps in sonia, that's my mate whom i'm studying with for this exam, who tells me, 'i told you it looked wrong!'...and i keep on thinking that a bloody equilateral triangle hasn't a symmetry line rotated by 45 degrees!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaargh! i mean, to look like it's rotated by 45 degrees on the sheet, the triangle itself should be rotated by 15 degrees...and, then again, only one of the symmetry lines would be rotated by 45 degrees, the other two wouldn't be rotated by 45 degrees all the same, so what's the point??

then the professor starts saying that actually ALL THREE symmetry lines have to be rotated by 45 degrees........aaaaaaaargh!!!!! HOW???????' for f**k sake, i mean, there's no way the three symmetry lines in an equilateral triangle coincide!!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and that's what happened while he was looking at the *first* drawing only!!!!!!!!!!!!!

luckily enough i woke up - and yes, you're thinking correctly, i've still got temperature, even though it's not as bad as the other day...

so...yesterday i came back from university and was feeling like poo...in fact, i then discovered i had high temperature (that's why i barely could stand up...)...belly kept aching etc...couldn't eat during the whole day...went to sleep unbelievably early cos head was going to explode and eyes did hurt like i had been smashed an italian/ancient greek dictionary right into my face - whereas the manics would've had bottle...erm...ok, anybody out there knows a song called "a design for life"?...i wish i had a bottle right here in my pretty face etc....hello??...anyways, am digressing...woke up this morning (hope this is my last music pun at least in this entry...) feeling pretty dizzy all the same, nevertheless i *had* to go to university as well cos of the architectural design class review...review went ok, btw, but i still feel poorly - not as bad as yesterday, luckily enough, but dizzy and sicky all the time...have to wear a thick sweater cos, despite of the warm weather (most of the people at uni were wearing just tshirts, it's been a nice sunny day), i shiver cos i'm cold...think i'm going to have another cup of chamomile tea...:(

aside: massive apologising to all the people i keep sending weird texts to on their mobiles!!!

There is a date rape drug going around called "beer" and it is generally in liquid form. The drug is now being used by female sexual predators at parties to convince their male victims to have sex with them. The shocking statistic is that "beer" is available virtually anywhere! All a girl has to do is persuade a guy to consume a few units of "beer" and simply ask the guy home for no-strings-attached sex. Men are literally rendered helpless against such attacks. After several "beers" men will often succumb to desires to perform sex acts on horrific looking women that they would never normally be attracted to.

Men often awaken after being given "beer" with only hazy memories of exactly what has happened to them the night before, just a vague feeling that something bad occurred. At other times these unfortunate men might be stung for their life's worth in a familiar scam know as "a relationship" - apparently men are easier victims for this scam after the "beer" has been administered and have already been sexually attacked.

Please! Forward this to every male you know.......... However, if you fall victim to this insidious drug and the Predatory women administering it, there are male support groups with venues in every town where you can discuss the details of your shocking encounter in an open and frank manner with a bunch of similarly-affected like-minded guys.

For the nearest support group near you just look up 'Public House' in the Yellow pages.

The Wisdom of the Zen Masters

A young monk had been under a famous Master for but two years when the old Master died. When the successor was installed, all monks who wished to continue under him went to ask his permission. When it was young Kyogen's turn, the new Master who knew him well asked: " So here you are, brilliant, with outstanding capacities, knowing all the scriptures by heart! Are you sure you want and need to continue this rough and simple training?"

The young man, rather pleased that his capacities were known, indicated that he considered it a good thing to stay for a few more years. The new Master took him up: "Well, so you are pleased with yourself! You can quote the scriptures by heart - tell me then, where do you go after you have died?"

Kyogen was speechless. His immense scriptural knowledge raced through his mind, but he could not remember any relevant passage. Piqued in his pride and convinced that the answer must be in the scriptures, he asked permission to withdraw so as to look it up. But however he searched, he could not find it. The question gripped him, he was determined to find out, feeling that everything was at stake.

So he poured over the scriptures, forgot food and sleep, and within three days was worked up to such a state of tension that he could no longer bear it. Gaining an interview with the Master, he admitted that he could not find the answer in the scriptures, and could the Master please tell him.

The Master replied that it was for him to find out, for if he were told, it would rob him of his own insight. Kyogen in the urgency of his problem was beyond reasoning, and now demanded an answer. On the Master's stern refusal, he gripped him and threatened to kill him. "And do you think my dead body will give you an answer?" laughed the Master.

At that the tension in Kyogen broke; he realized what he had done. He apologized and left the monastery, convinced that he had lost all his chances in this life. He decided to spend his days humbly and harmlessly as a wandering monk, hoping that in his next life he would thus have better circumstances in which to continue his training.

After years of wandering all over the country, he came to the tomb of the Sixth Patriarch which he found derelict and uncared for. He settled down there, restoring the place, keeping the grounds, and looking after the occasional pilgrim. Thus he lived for years.

One day, he was sweeping and weeding the grounds as usual, and as he tipped out his barrowful of weeds and pebbles in the back yard, one pebble hit a bamboo trunk with a resounding clink. On hearing that sound he suddenly "awoke" and with the awakening, the answer to his old question was also clear to him.

He cleaned himself up, dressed in his full monk's robes, climbed the mountain behind the pagoda, and there prostrated himself in the direction of his monastery, thanking the Master that even under threat to his life he had not divulged an answer which would have robbed him of his own insight.

Since 1992 the international film organizations of the Protestant and Catholic churches – INTERFILM and SIGNIS – have been represented by an Ecumenical Jury. At the Berlin Film Festival the jury has ten members and awards the main prize to a film of the Competition. It gives two other prizes of EUR 2,500 each to a film from the Panorama and the Forum. The festival wants to express its gratitude to Denis Auboyer, the owner of LVT and the donator of the LVT – Manfred Salzgeber Prize.

The film touches on female liberation, the conflict between city and country, and the rise of nationalism. The jury particularly admires the ability of director Maja Weiss to create a palpable atmosphere of fear in which we are not sure whether the menace is real or imagined.

We found the story very moving because it was both funny and sad at the same time – just like in real life. The relationship between the two brothers was nice and presented in a way which made it easy to follow. The actors were cast well and their acting was very convincing. We especially liked Eirik Evjen who played 13-year-old Victor. We hope to see more impressive film productions like this one in the future.

We have given this movie a Special Mention because we really liked the idea of an action film about children for children, and we found the actors - who were well chosen - fascinating. The movie was also incredibly exciting, from the very beginning up until the very end. We were especially impressed by the courage of the girl who was willing to risk her life to help her desperately ill father.

A PASSAGE TO OTTAWA

This film’s amazing actor made all the difference. Eight-year-old Omi (Nabil Mehta) not only has to learn to deal with a new culture, but also sets off to find a hero to save his mother who is so very ill.

This film from Israel impressed us greatly in all ways. Its two convincing actors, Itay Shore and Tomer Ben David, got the film’s contents across so well that they really got under our skin.

A Special Mention goes to

TORNEHEKKEN
The Hedge of Thorns

We picked this film because it was so suspenseful. We wondered, for example, if the father rabbit would return from the war or be killed, whether or not the son and the mother would survive, and what would happen to the friendship between the rabbit children. It was this close friendship, that did not even end during the war, which we especially liked. We also enjoyed the landscapes in the film, which were models. The topic of war is dealt with well and not played down.

A Special Mention also goes to

DELIVERY DAY
by Jane Manning

We have awarded this Australian production a Special Mention, because the everyday life of a Vietnamese emigrant family in Australia is shown so well. How the relationship between the brother and sister evolved was also presented well, and it was easy to understand the girl’s feelings.




PEACE FILM PRIZE

The jury has 9 members and views films from every section of the Berlin International Film Festival. The main award has a purse of EUR 5,000. Prize donators are the Action Group Peace Film Award in association with the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). In addition, the jury can award special mentions.

In doing so, he succeeds in creating a mad picture of a time “a moment before the eruption”. His filmic language is iridescent and neurotic like the society he encounters. The film succeeds in improving our understanding of the current situation.




TEDDY 2002

The nine members of this international jury – organizers of queer film festivals or gay/lesbian filmmakers – view those films in the programs of the Berlinale which have a queer context. After completing this selection, they award a TEDDY to a feature film, a short film and a documentary with a cash prize of EUR 3,000 each.

WESH WESH, QU'EST-CE QUI SE PASSE? plays in a run-down district on the outskirts of Paris. Hopelessness and boredom characterize daily life there. And it is exactly this mood which Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche converts into creativity. He cannot afford a video camera, so he borrows one and makes this film that displays such great vitality and captures reality so impressively that for great stretches it seems documentary.

The director’s courageous and open approach deeply impressed the jury. The film raises questions rather than just offering simple answers. The images and situations in the film are disconcerting, etching themselves on its viewers’ minds.

The jury looks forward to more good films by Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche. We congratulate him, his actors and crew for this compelling work.

With apparent ease and gentle humor, the director unpretentiously weaves a tight narrative full of nuances. Yet she still leaves enough leeway for her viewers to relate subjectively. UN DÍA DE SUERTE provides refreshing, bright new cinema, as self-willed as its protagonist.

This film deserves recognition, which is why the 2002 FICC jury awards the Don Quixote Prize to it, and of course in doing so we hope to encourage Ho Ping to create further cineastic treats.

I am looking for some energetic exuberant collaborators on a project that hopes to found an annual large scale multi-disciplinary installation on the Tiber.

I am presenting the project to the Comune di Roma and would enjoy the thrill of making an animated presentation and a dynamic website.

I wonder if there is anyone among you who is interested in working with me to augment the presentation to the Comune.

At this point I do not have a great deal of economic support.. there is much interest in the project and many important people will see the presentation materials.

So, haven't been writing much during the last few days, cos my mate Mike was here, and we ended up spending most of the time wandering around Rome to see ruins and all the usual stuff...

Major gossip is another friend of mine, Graham, got married (to Dawn) last Saturday!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
Spoke to him on Saturday night via Giles' mobile *waves hello to Winston!!!!!!* and he sounded pretty drunk...lol am amazed he didn't mention any Metallica albums during his own speech...Giles said he was all soppy, which is very funny, if you happen to know Graham...I mean, just putting the words "Graham" and "soppy" in the same sentence is hilarious!!! you know the hairy-(not that much, to tell the truth...)-metal-head type? well that's Graham for you all, altho he finally cut his hair recently...maybe Dawn forced him to do so, who knows?? :)

Well, that's all for the mo, exam's due on the 28th, please keep fingers crossed!!!!!!!!

When the chocolate addict in you begs for a sweet fix, bake this fluffy chocolate cheesecake over a chocolate cookie crust. Decorate it with even more cocoa delights, such as chocolate-dipped fruit or chocolate whipped cream.

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/3 cup butter, softened
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract


Directions
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).

2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together crushed vanilla wafers, confectioners' sugar, cocoa, and butter or margarine by hand. Press ingredients into a 9 inch springform pan.

3. In the top of a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips, making sure that they are very smooth.

4. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy with an electric mixer. Gradually beat in condensed milk until smooth. Mix in melted chocolate, eggs, and vanilla. Beat with electric mixer on low speed until the ingredients are thoroughly blended. Pour the filling into the prepared crust.

5. Bake at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for 55 minutes. The cake will seem underbaked in the center, but will continue to cook after you remove it from the oven.
Tiramisu Cheesecake

Ingredients

1 (12 ounce) package lady fingers
4 tablespoons butter, melted
4 tablespoons coffee flavored liqueur
3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese
1 (8 ounce) container mascarpone cheese
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 (1 ounce) square semisweet chocolate


Directions



1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place a pan of water on the bottom of oven.

2 Crush the package of ladyfingers to fine crumbs. Mix the melted butter into the crumbs. Moisten with 2 tablespoons of the coffee liqueur. Press into an 8 or 9 inch springform pan.

3 In a large bowl, mix cream cheese, mascarpone, and sugar until very smooth. Add 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur, and mix. Add the eggs and the flour; mix SLOWLY until just smooth. The consistency of the mascarpone can vary. If the cheesecake batter is too thick, add a little cream. Do not overmix at this point. Pour batter into crust.

4 Place pan on middle rack of oven. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until just set. Open oven door, and turn off the heat. Leave cake to cool in oven for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, and let it finish cooling. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or overnight, before serving.

just by the time i thought i was going to rest for five minutes, somebody called on my mobile...it was eugenio. (aside, for those who don't know, if anyone cares, eugenio is the lavative bloke i happen to er work with for this term's architecture design clas - yes, same person as 2 entries ago, the one who's doing nothing yet will find himself with additional scoring on his uni scoring paper. grrrrrr.) anyways, am digressing. he asked me IF I WAS FINISHED WITH THE MODEL, "ARE YOU SURE WE'RE GOING TO MAKE IT FOR THE DEADLINE???"...we????? *WE* ARE GOING TO MAKE IT FOR THE DEADLINE????????...so i ended up telling him that, sadly, yes, i am finished with that but i would've had more time to do other important stuff if someone would've graced me of their help, since it's team work...also, i'm really mad at claudia, cos apparently she told eugenio that he should always tell me i'm right...which he translated into 'since she knows what to do, let her do all the job while you waste your time waking up at 11 am and doing nothing all day'...so i called her to tell her she'd been a complete moron...yes, i know i shouldn't be moaning all the time about this bloody design class, but, honest, it's not fair at all. apparently he's only attenting this class this term, while i'm doing the impossible to finish all my exams this year...and he's even older than me!!!!!! he must've been attending uni classes for ages now, i really don't know...but that's none of my business, i mean, if he wants to graduate when he's 57 years old, that's his choice, this shouldn't mean he can burden everybody else with his part of work, tho. luckily enough, by april we should be finished with the project, so i'll just wave him bye bye and hope not to see him again for the rest of my life.

Following the themes of work and housing in conjunction with the competition and symposium series FUTURE VISION, now the idea competition FUTURE VISION LEISURE is announced. The profile of the competition originally initiated by Herbert Lachmayer (University of Art and Industrial Design Linz) has meanwhile been established. Once again, the issue is purposely formulated very freely and is targeted to progressive proposals and future-oriented architectonic concepts. A young, creative potential is to be fostered and networked with the sponsors from the world of business for mutual stimulation and encouragement. The competition will probe crucial issues, which will be presented and discussed in the framework of an international symposium in conclusion. The media-oriented culture and industrial city of Linz positions itself with this project in the architectonic field.

The primary functions of life, as they are defined by modernity, are currently subjected to a forced, primarily technologically conditioned trans-formation. Social structures are changing, subjective wishes and goals require their own reflexive formulation. Whereas leisure used to have the character of something taken for granted, now purposeful planning and conscious definition are increasingly being shifted into the focus of this constantly growing sector. How leisure may be architectonically formulated becomes a central issue.

Adventure and event culture are increasingly determining the different facets of life, "Disneyfication" has wide-ranging consequences. Critical approaches recede into the background here. Today leisure is part of the leisure industry, which artificially stages authentic experience. Leisure has become a commodity. FUTURE VISION LEISURE intervenes in this process. In a world that finds itself in a state of upheaval, that is increasingly virtual and mobile, innovative ideas and intelligent concepts are needed, which interpret the theme of leisure imaginatively and highly critically, beyond the realm of conventional ideas. Today leisure does not only take place in specifically planned locations, but also overlaps other functions in the sense of a dissolution of boundaries. Planning for leisure relates to urban space and includes issues of urban development. Which consequences result from the changed premises? What could a new culture of leisure look like? This is the central iss!
ue of the competition.

This centers around an expanded concept of architecture outside the realm of traditional definitions and categories. The boundaries to other artistic disciplines are more liquid today. Architecture is changing due to new technologies and media. The vision of leisure is articulated not only in content, but also aesthetically and spatially as the product of sophisticated planning methods.

All participants are invited to find innovative solutions and implementations for their works (ideas, concepts, 3-dimensional models, computer animations, installations, etc.) and to execute their projects in suitable quality.

The guidelines for the competition are intentionally formulated openly, in order to provide as much scope as possible for the submissions. Each participant is expected to define his or her own thematic focal points, outline the intention and implement it.

Pink isn't normally considered a power color. Yet Digna Rodriguez-Poulton, 44, president and creator of Daisy & Lilly, a retail store for "girls of all ages" in Westwood, N. J., wears it with assurance--often startling potential business associates by pulling Hello Kitty pens from sleek Kate Spade bags as though they were Mont Blancs. "They're better," says Rodriguez-Poulton.

"I so loathed the endless meetings you go to in the corporate world," sighs the former executive vice president at Urban Brands, an apparel retailer. "I hated having to listen to bombastic people, all of whom looked exactly alike. Invariably, they would arrive with their Filofaxes--and I would whip out my beloved Chococat Organizer. Sure, it raised eyebrows, but I loved that about it, too."

And her bosses? "They may have wanted to treat me differently because I didn't project the corporate image they had in mind," Rodriguez-Poulton muses. "But they couldn't, because I'm brilliant. It just so happens that, like so many other successful women I know, I'm also a girl. "

At first glance, Sanrio, Inc.'s nearly 30-year-old mascot appears to play to old-fashioned notions of femininity that have long since been bagged in the U.S. Hello Kitty products ranging from plush dolls to pocketbooks to pet carriers are often a soft, pastel pink. And Kitty White--the character's official name--isn't drawn with a mouth so she can best mirror her owner's moods (if you're happy, she's happy, if you're sad, she's sad, if you're purrr-plexed-well, you get the picture). But as a result, she's generally perceived as quiet, demure and endearingly sweet--not the image of your typical 21st-century businesswoman. Yet the growing number of career women carrying cell phones with Hello Kitty face-plates seems to indicate otherwise. "If I wanted a new pocketbook, I might buy a Gucci bag," explains Natalie Cohen, 23, a sales exec at Flapdoodles, a small children's clothing company based in Newark, Del. "I also happen to have a Hello Kitty phone. And the two--designer bag, pink-glitter phone--don't seem at all contradictory to me."

Nor do they seem inconsistent to consumer trends forecaster Faith Popcorn, founder of Faith Popcorn's BrainReserve, a marketing consultancy in New York City. In fact, they may be perfectly in keeping with the reality of today's businesswoman, who, unlike her unfortunate floppy-tie-wearing predecessors, doesn't have to look like a man in order to climb the ladder like one. "Hello Kitty's popularity among adult women strikes me as kind of a 'wink on pink,'" says Popcorn, who admits to having something of a Hello Kitty fixation herself. "It's like saying women are complicated--that we can't be contained. We can wear monochromatic Armani suits and whip out Hello Kitty notepads at a moment's notice. We have hidden facets. We're real."

Women are also, according to Popcorn, mightily pissed off. "Women are upset about having to leaving their kids in daycare all day, frustrated with having to hold back their tears, fed up with doing all the self-denying things they have to do in order to make it in business," she says. "So in defiance, they're bringing cutesy into the corporate sanctum. They're saying, 'Screw you, suits!' It's a small but very public act of rebellion."

Popcorn's point is worth considering in a larger context. Is it possible that being a girl in guy's world has evolved from impediment to power trip? That by flaunting their inherent "girliness"--or maybe just the extra X-women can gain some kind of extra edge in the office?

Depends on the person, the context and the message, hedges career consultant Caitlin Williams, Ph.D., a Westlake, Ohio-based expert on women's workplace issues and author of the Successful Woman's Guide to Working Smart: 10 Strengths That Matter Most (Davies-Black Publishing, 2001). "I applaud any way women can express their individuality and power at work," she says. "And minor as it may seem, sometimes the most rebellious thing a woman can do is to be herself in a workplace that doesn't appear to permit it. That said, however, I don't honestly see a flaunting of one's girliness as the next edge in business, but more, a flaunting of work and leadership styles that are different than those that have always been in vogue--styles that are women-driven but not necessarily 'girlie.'"

Thirty-one-year-old Kimberlee Auletta, vice president of a family-run PR agency in New York City and unabashed flaunter of a Hello Kitty ring ("It's a huge Hello Kitty head that you can take off, and underneath, there's a stamp, so you can stamp papers, people, whatever"), might agree. "My ring, which I love, is definitely girlie," she allows. "But in a way, what the ring represents--my ability to think and act creatively--certainly isn't. PC Magazine - The Blog Phenomenon

A recent overlooked Web trend—overlooked by the mainstream media, at least—is the proliferation of public diaries, generically referred to as Blogs. The term originated from "WeB log" and was further promoted by pyra.com as a Blog at its www.blogger.com site, although www.pita.com is considered the original source of easy-to-use Web logging. People who "Blog" are called Bloggers, and right now there are hundreds, thousands of Blogs on the Net.

The vanity page is dead; long live the Blog. The vanity Web page has lost momentum. People who posted one have already done so, and the growth has slowed. Most are uninteresting and uninspired. Cat pictures dominate too many of them. A Blog is the next iteration, and most vanity site mavens have gravitated toward these things. Serious vanity site developers have gone into posting hobby or special-interest sites, having learned by experience how to make an attractive Web page. This is, indeed, progress.

And the universe of these diaries can even be searched at various specialty search sites, such as www.blogfinder.com.

Generally speaking, these postings are fascinating, since they often have serious elements of Hyde Park corner blather, besides blatant exhibitionism and obvious self-indulgence. And whatever you think of them, you'll admit that they are much more interesting than the static vanity site from years ago.

One of the best examples you'll find on the Web of a homebrew special-interest site is the stunning Jacob's Bugatti Pages at http://homepage.mac.com/bugatti/jacob. If you have a hobby and want to make the Web part of that hobby, then look no further than Jacob's for inspiration. But if you just want to pontificate and talk about yourself, start a Blog.

Blogging goes beyond software posting and uses an entire system that allows for easy creation. With a Blog there is no coding to do. The Blog is usually more attractive than sloppy HTML done by an amateur, and by nature it demands updating so that the material is kept current. People can't resist updating the diary and apologize if they don't do it—as if anyone really cares. You have to be dedicated to a Web site to keep it current. Not so the Blog; it's more addictive. And hobbyist Blogs have emerged. For example, some people like to watch a lot of movies and review them. They see a movie and immediately post their comments. Some of these homebrew reviewers are better than the pros.

Still, with the few hobbyist exceptions, Blogs are mostly personal diaries. Here's where the sociology comes in. Why, exactly, do people want to have other people read these ramblings? Many are incriminating! Ask a Web log addict why he or she does it and you'll get a range of answers that tend towards the "because it's easy" or "because it's fun!" bromides. I think there are deeper reasons. Here are a few obvious possibilities:

Ego gratification. Some people need to be the center of attention. It makes them feel good about themselves to tell the world what important things they've been doing and what profound thoughts they've been having. Curiously, while this looks like the most obvious reason for a Web log, I think it's probably the least likely reason, since it's too trite and shallow.

Antidepersonalization. When people begin to think that they are nothing more than a cog in the wheel of society, they look for any way to differentiate themselves. The Web log proves they are different. Just read it. You'll see.

Elimination of frustration. Day-to-day life, especially in the city, is wrought with frustration, and the Web log gives people the ability to complain to the world. You get to read a lot of complaining in these logs. If you think I'm a complainer, oh boy!

Societal need to share. As a cynic who gets paid to write, I have a hard time with this explanation. But it seems some people genuinely like to "share," and this is one way.

Wanna-be writers. A lot of people want to be published writers. Blogs make it happen without the hassle of getting someone else to do it or having to write well—although there is good writing to be found. Some is shockingly good. Most of it is miserable. I expect to see those Open Learning classes around the country offering courses in Blog writing.

Whatever the reason for the Blog phenomenon, it's not going to go away anytime soon. The main positive change: far fewer cat pictures!

Princess Margaret Dies at Age 71

LONDON (AP) - Princess Margaret, the high-spirited and unconventional sister of Queen Elizabeth II, died Saturday morning after suffering a stroke, Buckingham Palace said. She was 71.

She died at 6:30 a.m. in her sleep at King Edward VII Hospital, the palace statement said.

Margaret suffered a stroke Friday afternoon and developed cardiac problems during the night. She was taken from Kensington Palace to the hospital at 2:30 a.m., the statement said.

"Lord Linley and Lady Sarah were with her and the Queen was kept fully informed throughout the night," the statement said.

A heavy smoker for many years, she has suffered repeated respiratory illnesses and had part of a lung removed in January 1985. She had a mild stroke in February 1998.

French title 'Les Contes d'Hoffmann'. Opera in three acts. Music by Offenbach, libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, based on their play of the same title (1851), which in turn was based on stories by ETA Hoffmann, from his volumes 'Nachtstücke' (1817), 'Fantasiestücke in Callots Manier' (1814) and 'Die Serapionsbrüder' (1819). Left incomplete by the composer at his death in piano score, the opera was revised, given recitatives and in part orchestrated by Ernest Guiraud. There is no definitive performing edition of the opera. Productions occasionally reverse the order of Acts II and III, and Guiraud's recitatives are sometimes replaced by the original dialogue. An edition by Dr Fritz Oeser, first performed in Jan 1980 conducted by Antonio de Almeida with Nicolai Gedda as Hoffmann, would seem most closely to represent the composer's intentions.



PROLOGUE In Luther's deserted tavern, a chorus of spirits of wine and beer is heard, while inside the adjoining opera house Don Giovanni is being performed. Guests are expected to arrive later in the evening, among them the poet Hoffmann (tenor) and the Milanese opera singer Stella, but it is Hoffmann's Muse who first appears. Knowing that fate decrees Hoffmann must choose this evening between his love for the Muse and his love for her rival, Stella, the Muse calls upon the spirits for help. Then she disappears to assume the guise of Nicklausse, Hoffmann's friend. Councilor Lindorf bribes Andrès, a servant of Stella, to intercept a note she has written to Hoffmann; it contains the key to her dressing room. Lindorf, confident of his power to achieve any goal, plans to keep that appointment himself. A crowd of noisy students fills the tavern. Hoffmann appears, accompanied by Nicklausse, and Lindorf spies them at a distance. Hoffmann is troubled; the students urge him to drink and sing, and he responds by starting the ballad of a grotesque dwarf named Kleinzach, only to digress into recollections of love. The punchbowl is lit, but the cheerful mood is broken by Lindorf, who goads Hoffmann into an exchange of sarcastic insults. Nicklausse finally interrupts, breaking the tension, yet the encounter leaves Hoffmann with a sense of foreboding. When the students tease him about his current infatuation with Stella, he offers to tell the story of three past loves....

ACT I: Awaiting the arrival of his party guests, the inventor Spalanzani admires his most recent invention, the mechanical doll Olympia (soprano), with which he hopes to recover money he lost in the collapse of the banking house of Élias. Hoffmann, the first guest to arrive, discovers Olympia and falls in love with her. Nicklausse gently teases him. The mad scientist Coppélius (baritone) arrives and sells Hoffmann a pair of magic glasses through which he alone perceives Olympia as human. Spalanzani and Coppélius haggle over their share of the doll's profits, the latter claiming he owns her eyes. When Coppélius agrees to sell his rights to Spalanzani for 500 ducats, the inventor gives him a check drawn against the house of Élias. Coppélius jokingly suggests that Olympia be married off to Hoffmann. After other guests arrive, Olympia captivates the crowd with a dazzling aria, accompanied by Spalanzani at the harp. Oblivious to the periodic running down of the doll's mechanism, Hoffmann is enchanted. When everyone goes to dinner, leaving the two alone, Hoffmann pours out his heart to Olympia. Believing she loves him as well, he kisses her; she whirls into motion and out of the room. Nicklausse suggests that Olympia might not be alive, but the poet refuses to listen. Coppélius returns in a fury, having discovered that Spalanzani's bank draft is worthless, and hides as the guests return from dinner for a waltz. They are joined by Hoffmann and Olympia, who whirl faster and faster, until Hoffmann falls and breaks his magic glasses. Seizing his chance for revenge, Coppélius grabs Olympia and tears her apart.

ACT II Crespel has fled with his daughter, Antonia (soprano), to Munich to end her love affair with Hoffmann. Sitting at the harpsichord, she sings a plaintive love song. Crespel begs her to give up singing: she has a weak heart, and the effort will endanger her life. He instructs his hard-of-hearing servant, Frantz, to allow no one into the house while he is gone. Left alone, Frantz tries to sing and dance. Hoffmann arrives, and Nicklausse, citing his past experience with love, tries to persuade him to devote himself solely to art. But Hoffmann resists, swearing eternal love to Antonia. Though she says her father has forbidden her to sing, she cannot resist asking if Hoffmann wishes to hear her. They join in a love song until Antonia nearly faints. Crespel returns and is alarmed by the arrival of the charlatan Dr Miracle (baritone), whom he recognises as an omen of doom: it was Miracle who treated Crespel's wife the day she died. While Hoffmann watches from a hiding place, the evil doctor inquires after Antonia and her overpowering love of music. Miracle questions the absent girl and describes her irregular pulse; when he commands her to sing, her voice is heard. The doctor offers medicines to save the girl, but Crespel, knowing this means death for his daughter, forces Miracle out. When Antonia returns, Hoffmann begs her not to sing. She reluctantly agrees, and he leaves, promising to return the next day. Miracle suddenly reappears, taunting Antonia with prospects of fame as a singer. The girl cries out to the portrait of her Mother, a famous singer, to help her resist temptation. Conjuring the portrait to life, Miracle declares that the Mother, speaking through him, wants Antonia to equal the glory of her own fame. As Miracle fiddles wildly on his violin, Antonia sings more and more feverishly until she collapses. Hoffmann rushes in, only to find her dead.

ACT III In a Venetian palace on the Grand Canal, the courtesan Giulietta (soprano) joins Nicklausse in a languid barcarole. Hoffmann abruptly changes the mood as he mockingly praises the pleasures of the flesh. Giulietta's current lover, Schlemil, jealously acknowledges her apparent affection for Hoffmann. Giulietta invites her guests to the gaming tables, but Nicklausse remains behind to warn Hoffmann against forming any attachment to the courtesan. The poet denies interest in her, declaring that should he fall in love with her, the devil may have his soul. Dappertutto (baritone), overhearing them, produces a large diamond with which he will bribe Giulietta to steal Hoffmann's reflection, just as she already has stolen Schlemil's shadow. Lured by the diamond, Giulietta agrees. She seduces Hoffmann, who is about to depart, and he falls in love instantly; during a passionate duet, she carries out Dappertutto's command. Schlemil returns, accusing Giulietta of having left him for Hoffmann. When Dappertutto comments on the poet's pallor, Hoffmann asks for a mirror and realises with horror that he has lost his reflection, but he is trapped by his infatuation. As the guests depart, Hoffmann demands that Schlemil give him the key to Giulietta's room; when Schlemil refuses, Hoffmann kills him in a duel, with a sword proffered by Dappertutto. Taking the key from his rival, Hoffmann rushes to Giulietta's room, only to find it empty. Returning, he finds her leaving the palace with yet another admirer, the dwarf Pitichinaccio, whom she embraces....

EPILOGUE Hoffmann has finished his tales and wants only to get drunk and forget. Nicklausse reveals that each story described a different aspect of one woman, Stella. Arriving in the tavern after her performance, the opera singer finds the poet confused and sneering; Stella prepares to leave with the triumphant Lindorf. Hoffmann interrupts their departure to sing one last verse of 'Kleinzach,' then collapses. Only the Muse remains behind with Hoffmann, who belongs to her at last.
